Yesterday I realized that I am the exact age that Jacob was when we started dating and I started to think about how different 23 is for me than it was for him.
He was a bachelor living with four roommates, working at a photography studio in Downtown San Diego with few responsibilities. I am married, living in suburbia with my husband and puppy, and working from home running a business. I guess everyone is at a different stage at different times in life.
This got me thinking about a book I’ve been reading for a women’s summer book study. In one of the recent chapters the author poses a question: Think about how many times you have wished, hoped, and prayed for something to happen (or not happen). How would your life would be different if all of those things had come true?
For some of you, you imagine that your life would be so much better if only you had gotten into this college or married that man or waited a few more years to have kids. But for me, I think of all the things I hoped and prayed for that I didn’t get at the time, or ever, and I am so happy. It was Ruth Bell Graham, wife of the world renowned Billy Graham, who once said, “If God had answered all of my prayers [with a yes], I would have married the wrong man… several times.”
Every lost dream, failed relationship, and disappointment has led me to this place. Do I have regrets? Of course. But, if I could, would I go back and change all of my disappointments to make things go my way? Absolutely not. Let’s be real, if things had gone the way that Jacob wanted in 10th grade, he might be married to my sister! (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you need to click here.)
I am pretty sure there are a good number of you that will judge me for saying this, but I could listen to the Country Strong Soundtrack on repeat, all day. I love it. It may just be the fact that I connect each song with a moment in the movie, but each song makes me feel something, makes me think. One of my favorite songs from this soundtrack is by Garrett Hedlund, Timing is Everything.
When the stars line up
And you catch a break
People think you’re lucky
But you know it’s grace
It can happen so fast
Or a little bit late
Timing is everything
So if you feel like the answer to all of your hopes and prayers is “no”, don’t be discouraged.
Turns out, timing actually is everything.
