This is a true story.
It was March of 2008, 3 months before Jacob’s and my first date. We hadn’t been in the same city for 2 years and beyond a Myspace message or two, had had no interaction for those 2 years. I was home for spring break and I was especially excited because my older brother Matt and his girlfriend were coming to Clovis for Easter. I was looking forward to getting to know Ashley (who is now his wife) better and getting to spend some rare quality time with Matt, who was busy in medical school.
I vividly remember one late afternoon we were sitting in the living room talking. A few months earlier I had had my first real heartbreak and although they both knew what had happened, I wasn’t one to really talk about it. Matt, not wanting to pry, but also not wanting to just ignore the obvious, asked me, “So… How are you doing?” I knew he wanted to know the truth so I just said, “I’m okay.” Ashley, with her amazing ability to lighten any situation then asked, “Well, we should find a guy for you! Matt has lots of nice doctor friends! What’s your type?”
My first thought, honestly, was “A doctor?? Oh yuck!” I just didn’t think I was cut out to be a doctor’s wife. But I thought for a second longer before answering.
A “type”… I’ve ever understood that. I’m not the kind of girl to just fall for every “nerd” or “jock”. But, I do know what I want in a personality. He has to be funny. He has to be sweeter and more gentle than your average guy. He can’t be a super manly man, but he should like to fix things and admire cars. He should be stylish but not care too much about his hair. I don’t want him to be as loud as me because then we will just compete constantly, but I don’t want a quiet guy either. He should have a job or at least a passion and drive to work. And of course, he has to love Jesus.
That was all too specific and hard to explain so I said, “I don’t think I have a type.”
“Well we need an idea of what kind of guy you’re attracted to so we can find one for you!”
I paused.
And then I said the first name that came to my mind.
“Jacob Willis.”
I guess it’s good to know what you want.
(Jacob, Me, Ashley, + Matt a year and a half later, the day Jacob + I got engaged.)
